KBC (Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting) Special Program

"Omoiyari Blossoms in the Disaster-stricken Areas: 25 Years of the Asian-Pacific Children's Conference in Fukuoka"

[Date] 2013Wednesday, August 21st, 14:05-15:00

[Synopsis]

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Fukuoka International Children's Conference, an international exchange event.

The number of 11-year-old "Junior Ambassadors (JA)" and "Peace Ambassadors (PA)" who have come to Fukuoka has exceeded 10,000 in total.

There are also young people who are taking concrete action around the world as international citizens.

One of them is Than Zin Oo, 26, who works for a pharmaceutical company in Myanmar.

(Participated as JA in 1998, PA in 2006, and President of Bridge Club Myanmar in 2013).

Last year, he spent three months in the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

They learned about the current situation and reconstruction measures, supported the disaster-stricken areas, and had warm interactions with the local people.

Wu says that the trigger for this was his experience at a children's conference.

Through his interactions with the victims, he learned something important.

That is the true meaning of "OMOIYARI (compassion)."

"OMOIYARI" is also the motto of the Children's Conference.

What is the true meaning of "OMOIYARI" that he came to understand while in the disaster area?

This summer, I will visit Tohoku with Wu and reunite with the people I interacted with and introduce them to you.

Wu also shared what she learned in the disaster area with her fellow Bridge Club members and the Child Ambassadors.

So what thoughts will they have?

Through the true meaning of "OMOIYARI," we will look at the significance of the children's conference that has been held in Fukuoka for 25 years.
